"JUSTICE Richard Sanders should be re-elected to the Washington Supreme Court. The court's most fundamental job is to push back against the other two branches of government — the executive and the legislative — when they step on the rights of the people. No member of the court does that more consistently, and with greater gusto, than Sanders." - Seattle Times, 8/4/2010
"[Sanders] views are iconoclastic, and his contributions are unique. His passionate dissents force the other justices to dig deeper as they research and write their rulings. He makes sure that the state Constitution is represented. He zealously defends individual rights. Though he is often in the minority – and sometimes alone – he helps strengthen the rulings that will ultimately affect society. He bucks conservatives on tough-on-crime cases. He frustrates liberals when it comes to regulations. He should delight anyone who wants open government." - SPOKESMAN-REVIEW 7/28/2010
"Since being elected to the court 15 years ago, Sanders has earned a reputation as a maverick, a staunch civil libertarian whose opinions span the political spectrum. Sanders says his avowed mission on the court is to defend individual rights. He readily acknowledges being a "unique, different voice" on the court, but feels it's needed to level the playing field for those who have been oppressed by government ... Although Sanders' opponents feel he's too agenda-driven to be impartial, our board is supportive of having a justice representing the "little guy's rights" on our state's high court." - Kitsap Sun 8/5/2010
Awards
Justice Sanders received the Freedom's Light award from the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association in 2008, an award given to honor individuals who have protected or advanced the First Amendment in Washington state, a critical aspect of which is access to public information.
This year he received the McPherson award from the Citizens Alliance for Property Rights for his defense of property rights.
